Field Report Summary

Physical Description

Resembles a large dragonfly, but its wings are covered in iridescent scales, similar to those of butterflies. The scales overlap to form a rigid but lightweight surface that allows for gliding. Its body is segmented and covered in chitin, with a metallic sheen. Possesses large, compound eyes and strong mandibles for catching prey. Has six legs adapted for clinging to branches. The overall color is a mixture of blues and greens, shimmering in the light. About 6 inches long with a 12 inch wingspan.

Habitat

Tropical rainforests and savannas, often found near bodies of water.

Dietary Behavior

Feeds on the nectar of specific flowering plants and also consumes small tree sap.

Evolutionary Origin

Evolutionary line thought to have diverged from a basal insect group, developing scale-like wings as a camouflage adaptation, convergently evolving similarities to both insects and reptiles.

Behavioral Notes

Performs elaborate mating dances in mid-air, displaying its brightly colored scales.
