Field Report Summary

Physical Description

A large cockroach, approximately 2-3 inches long, with a glossy, dark-brown exoskeleton. Unlike regular cockroaches, it secretes silk from specialized glands in its abdomen. These insects are often seen surrounded by loosely spun silk cocoons of off-white color. The cocoons can be found indoors or in shady outdoor locations. It possesses the typical cockroach features: long antennae, six legs, and a flattened body. The key feature is the constant secretion of a fine silk thread.

Habitat

Urban Environments and Forests

Dietary Behavior

Consumes a wide range of organic waste and can digest synthetic materials.

Evolutionary Origin

Adaptation to an urban environment led to roach-like insect to develop symbiotic relationships with silk-producing larva, evolving to produce their own silk-like substance.

Behavioral Notes

Constructs intricate webs of silk to trap small insects and filter water.
