Field Report Summary

Physical Description

Has the stocky body of a hyena, with powerful jaws and a distinctive sloping back. However, its body is encased in a bony shell similar to that of a turtle. The head is hyena-like, but the legs are shorter and sturdier, adapted for carrying the weight of the shell. The shell is mottled brown and green, and it has a distinctive 'laugh' that sounds like a turtle's hiss.

Habitat

Arid grasslands and savannas.

Dietary Behavior

Consumes a variety of insects, fruits, and decaying organic matter found on the rainforest floor.

Evolutionary Origin

A bizarre case of convergent evolution where a turtle-like reptile developed a snout reminiscent of a tapir to compete for resources in dense undergrowth.

Behavioral Notes

Extremely shy and spends most of its time buried in leaf litter, only emerging at night.
